Peaking for the Olympic Games: Most swimmers don’t!

Surprising results emerged from a study of 301 swimmers at the Athens Olympic Games. Most swimmers had a decline in performance at the Games compared to their entry times. The medal winners and finalists tended to surpass their entry times. Researchers Vladimir Issurin, Leonard Kaufman, Gilad Lustig and Gershon Tenenbaum offered three probable reasons – emotional strain and anxiety; metabolic changes induced by emotional and physical stress; and insufficient training during the final stage of preparation which may reduce aerobic and anaerobic capacity, muscle mass and power
